    Overview

    Italy offers two main routes:
    Schengen Visa (Type C) — short stays up to 90 days in any 180 (tourism, family, short business).
    National Visa (Type D) — stays over 90 days (study, work, family reunion, elective residence). After entry on a long-stay visa, you must apply for a permesso di soggiorno (residence permit) in Italy, typically within 8 days.
